About Mike Compton

Mike Compton is the founder of Mike’s Windsurfing. He was born and raised on the island of St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where life was inseparable from the ocean. Growing up on a houseboat, his days were shaped by fresh seafood, open water, and constant time on the sea.

Mike discovered windsurfing in 1987, and from the first session, it became his passion. As a teenager, he gravitated toward long-distance sailing—windsurfing from St. Thomas to neighboring islands and back, often returning under the stars. On windy days, he could be found sailing to Sapphire Beach, where he worked as a sailing instructor and refined his skills on the water.

That passion now drives the mission behind Mike’s Windsurfing. Today, MW is focused on youth involvement, growing the sport of windsurfing, and building a strong, inclusive windsurfing community in Dana Point and throughout Southern California. Through lessons, clinics, and social get-togethers, Mike’s Windsurfing supports sailors from beginner to entry-level and advanced sailors. MW is an authorized dealer for Starboard, Severne, Patrik, and Windsurfer LT, serving the Long Beach and San Diego areas while working to make windsurfing more accessible for the next generation.
