Refresh, restore, repair, or re-cone a vintage JBL driver, or improve any driver. Authenticity: This Aquaplas® is the real, one and only, true, genuine, resonant damping coating paste trademarked product registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Beware of imitations. Aquaplas is the speaker cone coating JBL used back in the 70s and 80s. They still use it today on their finest loudspeakers to reduce ringing and improve the sound. Now we incorporate graphene into our Aquaplas® paste and primers, setting a new standard for the state of the art in high-end, innovative, high-performance speaker cone coatings. Coating manufactures use graphene as a multi-functional additive. We incorporate it into our pastes and primers to enhance their mechanical properties. Although Graphene is in the category of additives, it cannot just be “put in” a composite material. The amount integrated does not increase the cost significantly. The minor expense comes from the nanotechnology process involved in creating the composition at the atomic scale. To achieve the improved strength of Aquaplas®, common boundaries must form with the graphene molecules. The combined matrix in the dispersion enhances the final compound. Trying to Match Color: The Aquaplas® color and texture is authentic. However, trying to match the color of a driver from the 1970’s is an arduous task. Colors change over time. The fifty-year history of environmental conditions subjected to a driver affects the color drift from the original. They may have yellowed, faded, grayed or sun bleached. Although the Aquaplas® color is true, it will not match for a touch up of an aged driver. To restore the color of these beautiful drivers and not to add weight to the cone, you can thin Aquaplas® with water and use it as a fresh up. Our customers have had successful results. For example, Minimum Velocity wrote, “This worked perfectly to refresh a couple of stained JBL woofers. I thinned it down with water and gave them a couple of light coats so as not to add too much mass. Thanks!” If your cones are not aged, then they are replacements. If they are “pretty straight forward white,” then they are not genuine Aquaplas® coated. Although most paints dry darker, certain types and finishes dry lighter. The unique and sought after texture of Aquaplas® lightens as it dries. Refresh the color of stained, faded, or yellowed cones. To not add weight, thin the AQUAPLAS® Paste with water and apply a light coat. If you are planning to do this, consider the advantages of restoring as well. It will improve the bond to the aging driver cone. As the coating on your 50-year-old cone ages, it becomes brittle, shrinks, and small fine splits develop as the coating loses elasticity and the ability to expand and contract with changes in temperature and humidity. We recommend that you restore the surface first. Restore aging driver cones with Aquaplas® Speaker Restoration Primer. It will provide the following benefits: · Reinforces and strengthens adhesion of the Aquaplas® to the cone. · Repairs hairline cracks in the Aquaplas®. · Replenishes lost elasticity. · Eliminates future cracking and flaking. · Enhances the durability of the speaker cone. · Increases longevity. Repair damaged drivers. 1. If there is damage to the paper cone, perform repair first. For tips on repairing, contact me at any time by email through eBay. 2. Restore the cone coating. Apply Aquaplas® Speaker Restoration Primer, do not thin. Let cure for 24 hours. 3. To not add weight to the cone, thin Aquaplas® Graphene Paste with water and apply a light coat. Allow another 24 hours to cure completely. 4. Only if necessary to cover thoroughly, apply a second coat. The paste adheres well to itself. Re-cone when beyond repair. Typical aftermarket cone membranes are gray or black, have no Aquaplas® coating, and are underweight. You can bring your speakers into original specifications by applying the correct amount of Aquaplas® Graphene Resonant Damping Coating Paste. This method works to restore your speakers to their original glory of beauty and resonate free sound. Amount to apply. One can easily calculate the quantity needed to bring your model into specification. Computers make it a breeze. “What if” designs and simulations are easy. An MS Excel spreadsheet on the effects of added mass on a driver’s Thiele-Small parameters is available upon request, or I can help with your project. Not all cones are plain paper. Aquaplas® designed this paste for untreated, uncoated paper cones. To apply to other materials or if in doubt, prime first. We recommend Aquaplas® Meld 007 Speaker Primer which bonds to tough-to-coat materials. Meld 007 primer insures the bond of the Aquaplas® resonant damping coating paste to the cone. Improve a new driver. Realize all the benefits of Aquaplas® with just a thin coat without affecting the Thiele-Small Parameters of the driver. Adding aquaplas Treatment to an uncoated driver does not just add a unique and sought-after color and texture. It improves loudspeaker sound and tonal quality by decreasing harmonic distortion. It does this by dampening inherent resonant vibrations and decreasing ringing. if added mass is desired, reference “Amount to apply” above. Application Instructions. Aquaplas® is a viscous water-based coating paste with a thick, sticky consistency between solid and liquid. The best way to apply Aquaplas® products depends on the product, user preference, dilution, and objective. We recommend that you use what you are the most familiar or comfortable with. You can spray it on or apply it with a brush, pad, trowel, or small roller. Frequently a customer will use a combination of applicator tools. Much loved but less common appliers are liners, daggers, filbert, sable, stick, stippler, digger, and others. Utilize what you know and like best. Time to cure (typically 24 hours) depends on the thickness of coating, air temperature, and relative humidity. There is a difference between dried and cured. Dried is when the water has evaporated from the coating. Cured is when the coating has reached maximum hardness. Brush foam or bristle. There is an unsolicited YouTube video made by one of our customers, on the application of Aquaplas® Paste with a brush. Sometimes only the removal of the filter is necessary. Troweling. Carefully spread onto the speaker cone surface with a small handheld tool such as an artist’s painting knife with a flexible steel blade. They usually have a pointed tip, lowered, or “cranked” and are suitable. The blade can be of different lengths and shapes: triangular, rectangular, or more diamond-like. Aquaplas® on the Front or Rear of the Cone Through the years there were various models but acoustically it made no difference if the Aquaplas® was on the front or rear of the cone. The Aquaplas® transfers the load between the graphene molecules and protects them from environmental damage. The tensile and flexural strength of the graphene plays a significant role in reinforcing Aquaplas®. The tensile strength helps resist destructive forces while the flexural strength helps resist bending. The graphene and the high polymer content provide these properties essential to a long-lasting cone. The graphene helps prevent cracking and breakage. Strength is important any time you create a cone. The graphene provides added value to the Aquaplas® by increasing its strength. Please see the attached atomic resolution image of graphene utilizing a scanning transmission electron microscope. The view shows graphene’s hexagonal atomic structure.
