Being a surf instructor with Wavehuggers is a fantastic opportunity to deepen your leadership, customer service, and water work skills. Our surf instructors teach private individual and group lessons, large group community classes, and assist with our spring and summer surf camps and adventures. You’ll also have the opportunity to participate in our ocean-conscious events!
What We’re Looking for
- You LOVE being at the beach and sharing your passion for surfing with others
- You are patient, energetic, confident, and out-going
- You are a good problem-solver and can handle a high-stress environment
- You are on-time, reliable, and responsive
- You have your CPR/First-Aid certification (can be obtained or renewed after hire)
For our Mobile Instructors:
- You’re able to store and transport foamboards and wetsuits
- You’re capable of managing your own schedule (with the help of Google Calendar)
- You have open availability on the weekends
- You’re able to respond to text messages quickly
- You have a flexible schedule
For our Kids Camp Instructors:
- You love working with kids!
Compensation:
- You will receive a base pay of $16/hour for a single person lesson.
- Pay increases depending on type of instruction with an added stipend for each additional student taught, and same-day bookings accepted
- Commission for referrals
- Customers often tip our instructors

Mobile Instructors
Locations:
San Diego & Orange County
Instructors will teach lessons at various beaches in either San Diego or Orange County. They will meet the client at the designated beach, provide an instructional beach demo (how to pop up, paddle out, stay safe, etc.), help the client catch waves in the water, and transport boards and wetsuits to and from the beach.
Camp Instructors

Huntington Beach or Encinitas
Spring Break or Summer 2023
Camp Instructors will work together to help the campers learn to surf! They will be responsible for teaching the kids how to paddle, pop-up, and read waves. Camp Instructors will spend most of their day in the water pushing campers in the waves, helping them paddle out, and keeping the kids safe in the ocean. Applicants must LOVE kids, LOVE the water, and be stoked to share the joy of surfing with others!
Beach Counselors
Locations:
Huntington Beach or Encinitas
Spring Break or Summer 2023
Beach Counselors will work together to organize camp and keep it running smoothly! They will oversee beach games, teach about ocean conditions, ensure the safety of our campers, communicate with parents, and oversee camp in general. Applicants must enjoy kids, be full of energy, be highly organized and be very aware of their surroundings!
