eBay British Parliament 1925 Vintage Lithograph 1917 Lithographic Image of Thomas Norton Nice Original print Light toning along top edge Facsimile Signature The birth of Thomas Norton occurred in Athlone, Ireland, March 25, 1816. He had the misfortune of losing his mother, by death, when he was just nine months old. His father married again, and the lad was brought up under the care of another, who treated him as her own son. Mr. Norton remained in his native land until he had gained some education in the schools there, and then decided to make a name for himself in the New World, where opportunities were greater. Accordingly he left his parental roof and came to the United States when in his teens. Upon his arrival here he immediately sought employment, and his first work was done in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Mr. Norton remained there for a year or two, then removed to the city of Boston, where his enterprise, tireless energy and perseverance gained for him the confidence of his employers. During the year 1850 he was employed in a large rubber factory in Boston, and continued to work in this capacity for a number of years, adding to his stock of knowledge and skill. Eventually, by dint of intelligence and patient industry, he worked his way upward, and later became connected with the leather business in Boston. Mr. Norton’s energy was remarkable, and carried him over many hard places with ease. His business acumen was also keen, and there were many other sides to his nature which, while not so conspicuous, were quite as worthy of praise. His sterling qualities were very generally recognized, while his honor, candor and the democratic attitude that he held toward all men won for him the admiration and esteem of a host of friends and associates. His success may well be said to have been the merited result of his own strong and fine personality. Thomas Norton was united in marriage with Bridget Kilduff, a daughter of John and Bridget (Murray) Kilduff. No family of Ireland has had a more distinguished record than that of Kilduff. The Murray family is said by good authority to be of Flemish origin. As early as the year 1250 the surname was common in several counties of both Ireland and Scotland, and at an ancient date branches were found in the counties of Fife, Edinburgh and Stirling, Scotland. Among the titles and honors possessed by the Murray family of Scotland may be mentioned the following: The Dukedom of Athol and Marquis, the Earldoms of Annandale and Mansfield, and the Lordships of Bothwell and Scoon. Although there are forty-seven coats-of-arms borne by the Murray family, many are very similar and are elaborations of the oldest armorial bearings. The arms are: Azure three stars or. Various branches of the Murray family settled in the State of Maine, and descendants of these early pioneers selected Massachusetts as their home. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Norton were the parents of nine children, of which seven grew to maturity. They are as follows: i. James F., whose sketch follows. 2. Mary Catherine, deceased. 3. Edward Henry, a veteran of the Civil War, served four years, participated in thirty-five battles. 4. Thomas Benedict, deceased. 5. John Patrick, deceased. 6. Joseph William, deceased. 7. Annie Elizabeth, Roxbury, Massachusetts, at No. 654 Parker street. She and all members of the family are members of the Roman Catholic church.
